8 Healthy Habits to Kickstart Your New Year

As we embark on a new year, many of us have set resolutions to improve our health, and we’re here for it! However, many of the goals we set at the start of the year go out the door as the months go by. To help you focus on cultivating sustainable goals that contribute to a healthier lifestyle in the long term, we’ve put together 8 healthy habits to keep you accountable all year round.

1. Move Your Body Daily

Daily physical activity is key to maintaining good health. Whether it's a daily walk, a Pilates class, a gym session or an at home workout routine, find an exercise that you enjoy and can stick to. We have a large variety of classes at the Featherstone Studio to keep you motivated towards your goals, check out our membership options here. Otherwise if an at home routine is more your thing, check out Featherstone On Demand.

2. Mindful Eating For Nourishment

Shift your focus from restrictive diets to mindful eating. Pay attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues. Savouring each bite, eating slowly, and avoiding eating at your desk or in front of the TV. Incorporate a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains keeping the focus on nutrient-dense foods to fuel your body for optimal health.

3. Adequate Hydration

Proper hydration is essential for energy, digestion, and overall health. Carry a reusable water bottle and make it a habit to drink water throughout the day. Infuse it with fruits or herbs for added flavour if that helps you reach your daily intake goal.

4. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Quality sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to support cognitive function, mood, and physical recovery. Limit screen time in the late afternoon and establish a bedtime routine that fosters good sleep hygiene. Wearable technologies (my personal favourites being Oura ring or Whoop) can help keep you accountable to your bedtime routine and track your sleep quality.

5. Stress Less, Live More

Chronic stress can negatively impact both physical and mental health. Incorporate stress reducing activities into your daily routine, such as meditation, breathwork, yoga, or spending time in nature. Find what works for you and make it a consistent practice. Remember, it's not about eliminating stress but managing it effectively.

6. Digital Detox Moments

Excessive screen time, especially before bedtime, can interfere with sleep patterns and contribute to sedentary behaviour. Allocate specific times for checking emails and messages to avoid constant digital distraction. Use the freed-up time for activities that bring joy, relaxation, or personal growth.

7. Cultivate Meaningful Connections

Nurture meaningful relationships with friends and family. Social connections have been linked to better mental health and overall life satisfaction. Make time for social activities, whether in person or virtually, and prioritize genuine connections.

8. Feed Your Mind with Learning

Set aside time for personal growth and learning. Whether it's reading a book, taking an online course, or picking up a new skill, stimulating your mind enhances cognitive function and brings a sense of accomplishment.

Remember, the key to a healthier lifestyle is consistency and gradual progress. Choose a couple of habits to start with, and as they become ingrained, add more. Small, positive changes lead to significant long-term improvements. Here's to a happier and healthier you this 2024!
